HOW TO IDENTIFY AUTOMATION OPPORTUNITIES IN YOUR BUSINESS

The most obvious process to automate is not necessarily the most valuable one.

AUTOMATION IS NOT THE VALUE

Most organisations contain hundreds — sometimes thousands — of activities that could theoretically be automated. Finding something that can be automated is easy. Determining what is worth automating is much harder.

Removing a few minutes from a low-volume activity may have almost no commercial significance. Changing a high-volume process that constrains an entire operation could be transformational. Both can be called automation. Their value is completely different.

LOOK BEYOND TIME SAVINGS

Automation business cases are frequently reduced to hours saved. That can underestimate the opportunity. A faster, more consistent or more scalable process can affect customers, sales, errors, capacity, management information and growth.

The value may therefore sit somewhere other than the task being automated. This is one reason automation opportunities can be difficult to identify from process maps alone.

SOMETIMES THE PROCESS IS THE PROBLEM

Organisations can become very good at automating processes that perhaps should not exist in their current form. A process may have accumulated steps, approvals, workarounds and systems over many years.

Automating each element can make the existing process faster. But it can also preserve unnecessary complexity. Sometimes redesigning the process creates considerably more value.

THE HIDDEN CONNECTIONS MATTER

An operational bottleneck rarely exists in isolation. A delay in one department can affect another. Poor data quality can create manual work elsewhere. A slow internal approval may eventually become customer friction.

The visible cost of a process may represent only part of its economic impact. Understanding those connections is often where the more interesting opportunities emerge.

FROM AUTOMATION POTENTIAL TO BUSINESS POTENTIAL

The question is therefore not simply what can be automated. A stronger question is where changing the way work happens could create meaningful business value.

Only after that opportunity is understood should the organisation determine whether automation, AI, integration, process redesign or another approach offers the best route forward.

FIND VALUE. QUANTIFY VALUE. REALISE VALUE.

You may already know which processes frustrate your organisation. The more interesting question is whether you know what changing them could actually be worth.
